FAST Weekend Wrap-Up: Holtgraver & Stewart Split Attica Twin Features; Wilson Cashes In at Fremont while Mintz Adds to Points Lead

MAUMEE, OH (5-20-13) by Bryan Autullo - F.A.S.T. Public Relations

The Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by KS Sales & Service was back in action in Northern Ohio this past weekend. Mother Nature was not a factor either night making this only the second back-to-back event weekend of the 2013 season.

On Friday, May 17th the series participated in the Eric Phillips 25th Anniversary Classic at Attica Raceway Park. Attica honored Eric Philips, the track’s first promoter in 1988, by running twin features for the F.A.S.T. 410 Sprints with each consisting of 25-laps and both paying out $2,500 to win ($250 to start). The first feature event awarded full F.A.S.T. championship points, while the second was just for cash and bragging rights.

Danny Holtgraver picked up the first feature win of the night with Dale Blaney, Bryan Sebetto, Craig Mintz, and D.J. Foos rounding out the top-five. Foos was the hard charger, picking up 13 positions on his mission to get to the front. The top-8 finishers from the first feature were inverted (by dice roll) to line up the second feature. Shane Stewart went on to win the second event, but 2nd place finisher D.J. Foos challenged for the win late in the race while Dale Blaney held off Brandon Martin (in his Mark Keegan "X" tribute car). Greg Wilson would round out the Top 5.

The F.A.S.T. organization and Attica Raceway Park, along with a generous donation from Kevin Shammo of KS Sales & Service, Linda and Laverne Burns of Burns Electric, and Underground Utilities, awarded a $500 bonus to D.J. Foos, who was the F.A.S.T. member driver with the best average finish between both features. Also, Brandon Martin picked up a $200 bonus with the second best average finish.

On Saturday, the F.A.S.T. Series returned to Fremont Speedway for Night #8 of the 18-race schedule. D.J. Foos continued his successful weekend by setting quick time for the night. The main event would prove to be another exciting race for Foos as he was contending for the win at the end. The feature got off to a rocky start with several spins and restarts, then eventually a red flag on lap 1 for Dean Jacobs who jumped the cushion in turn 3.

Brian Lay led the field on the multiple restarts and ran out front until Brian Smith and D.J. Foos got around Craig Mintz and chased Lay down. Smith would eventually take the lead, but a hard charging Greg Wilson, who started 18th, was rocketing to the front. With just a handful of laps remaining, Wilson and Smith battled for the lead. On lap 26, Wilson banged wheels with Smith sending Smith spinning into the infield. On the restart, Foos gave Wilson all he could handle, but Wilson pulled away in the closing laps and took the win. Foos, Byron Reed, Mintz and Chris Andrews completed the Top 5.

The racing action from the weekend scrambled the F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup point standings as several drivers missed features and shows. After the dust had settled from the racing action over the weekend, Craig Mintz increased his lead to 52-markers thanks to a pair of top-five finishes. A top-10 at Attica and top-5 run at Fremont helped Chris Andrews solidify his spot in second place, while D.J. Foos jumped into the top-five for the first time this season and sits in 3rd. The Fremont, Ohio native has started to turn heads thanks to an impressive weekend aboard the Genzman Racing Enterprises #53. Caleb Griffith moved into 4th place just 18-points behind Foos. A roller coaster of a weekend for the B&S Racing #5 dropped Byron Reed into 5th place after missing the feature at Attica, but rebounding with a podium finish at Fremont.

The Fremont/Attica Sprint Title will sit idle for the next two weeks as the tough local contingent welcomes the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions over Memorial Weekend at Fremont Speedway. Then the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars Series invades Attica Raceway Park the following weekend. F.A.S.T. Series action for both the 410 Sprints and 305 Sprints returns Friday, June 7th at Attica and Saturday, June 8th at Fremont.

Wilson Charges From 18th To Punt Himself In Victory Lane At Fremont

By Brian Liskai - Fremont Speedway Public Relations

(Fremont, OH) For the second week in a row, the fans at Fremont Speedway were treated to a thrilling 410 sprint car race that featured wheel banging, the winner coming from deep in the field and a late race charge from a rookie.

With four laps to go, Brian Smith was trying to hold off Greg Wilson who had charged from his 18th starting position, and rookie D.J. Foos as they sliced through lapped traffic. Smith and Wilson banged wheels entering turn one with Smith spinning into the infield with front end damage.

On the ensuing restart, Foos drove hard to Wilson’s outside as they battled side by side. Foos would lead lap 27 by a bumper. Wilson would slide back into the lead on the bottom as Foos continued to race to his outside. As they came to the white, Foos again had a big run on the top side of turns three and four, but Wilson was just too strong on the bottom of turns one and two. Coming to the checkers, Foos gave it one last shot on the high side, but Wilson drifted up exiting turn four, breaking Foos’ momentum as Wilson drove to his second win of the season on Roots Poultry Night.

It was a Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont/Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service points race that will reward the champion at season’s end with $10,000.

“I’m sorry to you fans that me and Brian bumped cause that was going to be a hell of a race. I love this sport and we banged wheels going for the win and the first guy to congratulate me at the scales was Brian Smith. Now that’s one heck of a man right there,” said Wilson beside his DNC Hydraulics/Hercules Tire/All Star Plumbing and Heating/Ohio Logistics backed #w20.

“I knew D.J. was pretty good in three and four there…I could see that early on in the run. When we got going and I hit my marks down there we were pretty bad ass off the bottom. I can’t believe this. We started 18th and I’m sitting there and I’m thinking if we can run top five I’ll be happy and then the cautions fell at the right time and this Warnimont Motorsports car was awesome. I have to thank Zack, John, Roger, my dad and most of all, my wife and my kids. DNC Hydraulics is a big part of our team and has been for a lot of years and the Conaway family lost a father Friday night so this win is for them,” added Wilson in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

In the 30-lap Fremont/Attica Sprint Title Feature, Brian Lay and Jody Keegan would bring the field to the green, but before a circuit could be completed, Duane Zablocki would spin in turn three. When the green came back out, Lay grabbed the lead over Craig Mintz, Foos, Keegan, Smith and Stuart Brubaker.

After a lap was in the books, Dean Jacobs got upside down in turn four – he was uninjured. On the restart, Brubaker spun off of turn three. Another lap was then completed and Sheldon Haudenschild spun. Then everyone calmed down and the racing heated up.

Lay would jump back into the lead with Mintz battling Foos and Smith for second while Byron Reed, Caleb Griffith and Todd Heller gave chase. Wilson would move into the top 10 by lap five. Just two laps later, Foos and Smith drove around Mintz and closed on Lay. Foos and Smith raced side by side for second over the next four circuits as they moved into lapped traffic. On lap 12, Smith would drive under Lay to take the lead as the caution flew a circuit later for Todd Heller.

The running order on the restart was Smith, Lay, Foos, Mintz, Reed and Wilson. When green came back out, Smith pulled away slightly as Foos blasted into second with Lay, Mintz and now Wilson in pursuit. Wilson would drive into fourth on lap 16 and picked off Lay for third on the next lap. Smith was coasting well on the bottom while Foos was blasting around the top and Wilson drove the low line. With 10 laps to go, both Foos and Wilson began inching closer to Smith who was catching the back of the pack. On lap 24, Wilson would drive into second as the leaders raced into lapped traffic.

As they raced to the flag stand for the five-to-go signal, Wilson was now on Smith’s rear bumper. As they exited turn four on lap 26, Smith, blocked Wilson’s advance and when they dove into turn one contact was made, sending Smith spinning as they tried to race each other and lapped machines.

On the restart, Foos got his elbows up and blasted to Wilson’s outside, actually leading by a nose on lap 27. But, Wilson hit his marks perfectly on the bottom of turns one and two and drove back into the lead. Racing to the white, Foos drove to Wilson’s outside as they battled wing to wing. Foos gave it one last shot in turns three and four coming to the checkered, but Wilson let his car drift up to break Foos’ momentum. Wilson took the win over Foos, Reed, Mintz and 13th starter Chris Andrews.

Holtgraver & Stewart Share The Spotlight As Attica Celebrates 25th Anniversary

By Brian Liskai - Attica Raceway Park Public Relations

(Attica, OH) Attica Raceway Park is quickly becoming one of Danny Holtgraver’s favorite tracks. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania resident passed Dale Blaney with two laps to go in the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (FAST) feature to score the win in the first of two 25-lap features on the Eric Phillips 25th Anniversary Classic. In the second feature, Bixby, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart held off a charging rookie D.J. Foos to score his third career win at the track on American Powersports/Sutton Bank Night.

In the first of the 25-lap features (which counted as a full points race), Holtgraver, who scored his first career UNOH All Star win at Attica last year, led early, but lost the lead to Blaney with 10 laps to go as they raced in lapped traffic. But, a red flag with five laps to go gave Holtgraver a chance to regroup and he drove to the top edge of the track when the green flew and battled with Blaney until driving by on lap 23 and went on to score his second career victory at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant.

“When Dale drove by me I just tried to stay calm. I guess the whole time I really wasn’t running the top hard enough. I kind of just said screw it on the restart cause I had to..it was going to be my only shot. And when he went back to the bottom I found out the top was going to hold me. I couldn’t tell racing if I could trust it at first, but it worked out,” said Holtgraver in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Rob Hunter/Bryan Grove owned machine. “I have to thank Canton Erectors, Berlin Natural Bakery, Classic Ink, DKW Transport, Kistler Engines, J&J Racing and VRP Shocks.”

In the second 25-lap feature (which was a non-points race), Stewart, aboard the Joe Gaerte #3G, would lead all the way, but it wasn’t easy. Foos, who charged from 18th starting spot to a fifth place finish in the first feature, would drive into second on lap five after a spirited battle with Greg Wilson, and with eight laps to go was closing quickly on Stewart. But, a caution with six laps to go gave Stewart the break he needed as he drove to the victory.

“I can’t thank Joe (Gaerte) and Tim (Norman) and Cindy enough for working hard for me and putting me in this race car. It’s one of the four, five, six or seven I’m going to be in this summer. Very thankful to be the pilot of that thing. It’s a brand new Cool chassis which are made in Australia and a lot of people aren’t familiar with them,” said Stewart of his Gaerte Engines/XYZ Machining/Red Line Oil/All Star Performance backed machine.

“We made a lot of whole sale changes after the first A-main and track position was huge. The way the top got cleaned off…just starting on the front row was definitely vital. Everyone did their job and I didn’t run off the race track. That kid in the 53 (Foos) was fast all night and it’s good to see all the young kids. The sport just keeps getting younger and younger and the future looks pretty bright. I’m proud I can still have people like this call me and have me run their car. You will see me quite a bit around here this summer…here and Fremont and we are going to try and do Ohio speedweek. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to victory lane here. I was telling the guys earlier I let one of the Brad Doty Classics slip away on the last lap to Danny Smith. It’s always great to win here,” added Stewart.

In the first 25-lap 410 feature, it was Holtgraver and Bryan Sebetto who brought the field to the green, with Holtgraver rocketing into the lead. Cap Henry would spin after a lap was complete and when the green flew again, Holtgraver would continue to lead as Brandon Martin, sporting a paint scheme similar to the legendary Mark Keegan X car, would drive into second. After a lap three caution, Holtgraver would drive away again with Martin, Sebetto, Blaney, Brad Bowman, Stewart and Craig Mintz in tow. With five laps in, all eyes were on Foos who had moved from his 18th starting position to 8th.

The top four would remain Holtgraver, Martin, Sebetto and Blaney as they raced into heavy lapped traffic by the 13th circuit. Martin would pressure Holtgraver as Blaney closed. Blaney would grab second on lap 14 and drive under Holtgraver for the lead a circuit later. Sebetto would take third from Martin on lap 17 with defending track champion Mintz moving into fifth on lap 17, ahead of Stewart and Foos.

With five laps to go, Travis Philo would get upside down, collecting Henry. When the green reappeared, Holtgraver jumped to the high side challenged Blaney for the lead while Sebetto, Martin, Mintz, Foos and Stewart gave chase. Blaney and Holtgraver would race side by side over the next two laps before Holtgraver executed his winning high side move on lap 23 to take the lead. Holtgraver went on to the victory over Blaney, Sebetto, Mintz and Foos.

The top eight finishers were inverted for the second 25 laps feature after Holtgraver drew a card. That put Greg Wilson and Stewart on the front row. When the green flew Stewart quickly grabbed the lead over Wilson with Foos driving into third over Blaney, Martin, Sebetto and Holtgraver. Henry would bring out the caution on lap five just as Foos grabbed second from Wilson. On the restart Blaney would drive into third, but he and Wilson waged a tremendous battle over the next several laps until the caution flew for a Cole Duncan spin on lap 9.

Stewart was able to get great restarts and pulled away slightly from Foos with Wilson, Blaney, Martin, Mintz, Caleb Griffith and Sebetto in tow. With 8 laps to go, Foos began chopping into Stewart’s lead a tenth of a second a lap and was within a car length of the leader when the caution flew for Mintz, who suffered a broken front suspension part with six laps to go.

Again Stewart would get a fantastic restart and pulled away for the win with Foos, Blaney, Martin and Wilson rounding out the top five. Foos would earn a $500 bonus from the Kistler Racing Products FAST Champion Series for having the highest average A-main finishing position among the FAST Series drivers.

FAST Weekend Wrap-Up: Henry Outduels Andrews for FAST Victory at Fremont; Andrews Moves Into Second Behind Mintz In FAST Points

MAUMEE, OH (5-12-13) by Scott Porter - F.A.S.T. Public Relations

The Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title presented by KS Sales & Service returned to action in Northern Ohio. Yet another soggy Friday afternoon washed out the fifth event (second F.A.S.T. event) of 2013 at Attica Raceway Park. However, a cold, wet forecast didn’t deter Fremont Speedway promoter Rich Farmer from swinging open his gates to faithful fans on Saturday night.

Fans in attendance were treated to a Jim-dandy of a feature event at “The Track That Action Built.” The top eight starting positions were determined by “King of the Hill” match races, which paired drivers in a bracket format of two-car, two-lap dashes. In the finals for the 410 sprints it was Cap Henry and Chris Andrews slugging it out around the 1/3-mile clay oval. The pair raced inches apart from one another and ultimately it was Chris Andrews aboard the Burmeister Racing #16 earning the pole position. The King of the Hill finale was ultimately a prelude for the feature event, where Andrews and Henry would resume their furious battle in lap traffic. The final five laps left fans talking about the near misses as they left the track after Henry held off Andrews' final attempts going on to win his first career feature win at Fremont Speedway.

The second place finish for Andrews vaulted him up three positions in the F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup point standings and he now rests just 30-points back of Craig Mintz. Mintz, the 2009 Fremont/Attica Sprint Title Champion, overcame a rough night in which the Reel-Geese Decoys, Ti22 Performance #09 had to use the B-Main in order to transfer into the feature. Mintz would charge from his 13th starting position to escape the night with an 8th place run. Cole Duncan moved into third place in points just 10-points back of Andrews. Brian Smith and Byron Reed both dropped two spots in points and round out the top-5.

The JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Championship Series were also in action at the 1/3-mile Fremont clay oval. One of the hottest sprint car drivers in the country continued his winning ways as Bradner, Ohio’s Nate Dussel picked up his first F.A.S.T. 305 feature win of the season and his fifth feature win of the year. This win jumped Dussel into second place in the championship hunt just 9-markers back of John Ivy who finished in second on Saturday. Bobby Clark dropped to third, but just 12-points out of the lead. Jordan Ryan moved into fourth place thanks to his podium finish, while Dustin Dinan rounds out the top-5.

The Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title will be back in action on Friday, May 17th with the Eric Phillips 25th Anniversary Classic at Attica Raceway Park. During their silver season, Attica’s John Bores & Rex LeJeune will honor Eric Philips, the track’s first promoter in 1988, by running twin features for the F.A.S.T. 410 Sprints with each consisting of 25-laps and both paying out $2,500 to win ($250 to start). The first feature event will award full F.A.S.T. championship points, while the second will be for the cash and glory.

Racing moves onto Fremont Speedway on Saturday, May 18th with Kids Race Into Summer Night. Track promoter Rich Farmer will be distributing tickets to schools around the surrounding counties near Fremont Speedway.

The JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Championship Series goes on a hiatus until Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th.

Highlighting the night are twin features for the F.A.S.T. Series highlight the night with each consisting of 25-laps and both paying out $2,500 to win and $250 to start.  Only the first feature event for the 410 sprint cars will count towards the $10,000 season-ending championship for the Fremont/Attica Sprint Title. Cash and prestige will be on the line when the cars are pushed off for the second feature of the night. Details about the race format and more bonus cash will soon be released by Attica Raceway Park.

The F.A.S.T. organization, along with a generous donation from Andy Shammo of KS Sales & Service, Linda and Laverne Burns of Burns Electric and Underground Utilities will now be awarding a $500 bonus to the F.A.S.T. member driver with the best average finish between both features. Any ties will be broken by whoever is highest in F.A.S.T. points after the first feature event on Friday, May 17th.
