The Kistler Racing Products Fremont/ Attica Sprint Title (FAST) competitors made the short tow to Fremont Speedway for Night #18 of the race for the Kistler Cup on Saturday night. Byron Reed’s lead atop of the FAST Kistler Cup Point Standings would see a small chunk (9-points) taken out of it by Mark Keegan after Attica. Twenty-six drivers were signed in and greeted by a much improved track surface. Numerous hours of work over the week by the staff at Fremont with the help from Helms & Sons Excavating, gave way to a fast, smooth, multi-groove racing at “The Track That Action Built.”
The evening started off with Bryan Sebetto posting the TQ Fiberglass Quick Time with a lap of 12.59 around the historic 1/3-mile clay oval located inside the Sandusky County Fairgrounds. Lee Jacobs, Craig Mintz and FAST Rookie of the Year Points Leader Shawn Valenti won their heat races. Sandusky, Ohio’s Chris Andrews used the B-Main to earn a spot in the 30-lap feature and was joined by Mike Linder, Matt Linder, Brian Smith and Scott Euler who picked up the transfer positions.
Todd Heller and Jamie Miller led the field to the green flag in A-main action and it was Heller powering out of turn two with the lead as Miller jumped the cushion and fell back to fifth. Heller would set a blistering pace on the high side with Lee Jacobs, Bryan Sebetto, Craig Mintz and Miller in tow. The leaders quickly found themselves in lapped traffic by the 6th circuit and Craig Mintz and Byron Reed were on the charge. Reed would race himself into the Top 5 after powering past Miller. Mintz soon disposed of Sebetto for third and set his sights on Lee Jacobs in second. Mintz raced past Jacobs in the next corner and quickly caught up to Heller on the next lap in traffic. With ease the defending FAST Champion was back in a familiar spot atop of the leader board, as he passed Heller at the flag stand on lap 10.
Mintz would soar off to a healthy lead as a 3-car battle brewed behind him for second place as Heller, Jacobs and Sebetto wowed the crowd with daring moves in lap traffic. Sebetto would squeeze past Jacobs for third out of turn two as Heller drove off from the duo. The race would be slowed by its first caution on lap 15 as Sheldon Haudenschild would back his #93 machine into the styrofoam barriers in turns 1 & 2. The restart would have Mintz and Heller separated by 3 lapped machines followed by Sebetto, Jacobs, Reed and Chris Andrews in the Top 5.
The race got underway with lapped cars becoming a key factor as Mintz pulled away yet again. Andrews would jump the cushion in turns 3 & 4 paving the way for five cars to get past before the next caution flew for Brandon Martin's flat left rear tire. The crowd’s attention may have been up front, but Dean Jacobs was on the prowl yet again moving up to 7th place after starting in 17th. The next green flag run would bring heartbreak to Todd Heller, who was in 2nd place, when he failed to turn and drove straight into the soft walls in turn 1 ending his night. The restart would see Mintz and Lee Jacobs at the top of the class with two lapped machines between them and Reed, Sebetto, Dean Jacobs and Keegan. When the green flag flew Reed quickly routed his B&S Racing machine past the lapped cars, while Dean Jacobs put a slider on Sebetto for fourth. The race would be halted yet again when Brian Smith stopped on the front stretch with front-end damage on lap 20.
The race found its pace in the final ten laps, as Gibsonburg, Ohio’s Craig Mintz would drive off to a sizable lead over Lee Jacobs and Reed. Behind them Sebetto would return the favor on Dean Jacobs and claim fourth place for good with a slide job out of turn two. Mintz would fly uncontested in the final five laps and hit his makes in stride around Fremont to earn his first feature win of the 2010 season. Lee Jacobs, Reed, Sebetto and Dean Jacobs rounded out the Top 5.

"Everything kind of fell into place. We made the inversion and the 4 put us a little closer to the front than a 6 would have. We got lucky and were really good in the heat race. I had kind of a pathetic start (in the A-main). I think we went from 4th to 7th or 8th and I just had to be patient and follow through 3 and 4. Lee was getting grip off of 4 and I wasn't. I was running the top in 1 and 2 and I was just trying to keep it off the curb and we were pretty tough tonight. We did what we could,” said Mintz besides his Real Geese, KS Sales & Service backed #20X Kistler Engines powered Maxim, “I gotta thank my dad and Brad and Kevin Shammo and everybody over there that's helped out at the shop. We've started to get a hold of things and get back to basics. We had some pretty trick stuff trying to make it work and it just wasn't working for us. I also have to thank Kistler Engines…they put a heck of a bullet in this thing."
"I've never won a track championship in a sprint car and we were blessed enough to win the FAST thing (last year) and looking at the records posted of the past guys who have run here and won here it would be a heck of an achievement."
Mintz’s win would shrink the gap between him and Mark Keegan (who finished 7th) for second place in the FAST Kistler Cup Points Standings to just 13-points with just a handful of races remaining. Reed’s third place run would extend his lead atop of the points in his quest for the series’ sophomore title.
The Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series squares off in its final back-to-back weekend of racing in 2010 when they return to Attica Raceway Park on Friday, August 6th before trekking down I-80 to Fremont Speedway on Saturday, August 7th. Only four more points events remain before shares of the $60,000 cash/prizes point funds is divided up at the season ending banquet.
